Is it confidential?

The British Psychological Society provides clear guidelines for its members for ensuring the protection of client confidentiality. There are some situations in which confidentiality is limited, for example where there is risk of harm to self or others (eg. children and young people). In addition, if the courts require, they can subpoena therapy notes if, for example, the client was seeing the therapist as part of matters relating to legal disputes such as personal injury claims or child custody matters.

Your therapist should always describe the extent and limits of confidentiality on your first visit. If they don’t, please enquire so that you can be sure about how your confidentiality is protected. Additionally, you are protected by the Data Protection Act.
